Why Illustrator files show no thumbnail
Illustrator does not add thumbnails to File Explorer on Windows. Adobe Bridge shows them, but only inside Bridge, and opening Bridge to find one logo is slower than it should be.
EPS files are worse off. Windows has never been able to display them, and Microsoft Office removed its EPS support some years ago.
Get AI and EPS thumbnails in every folder
Design Previewer adds thumbnails for AI, AIT, EPS and EPSF files to File Explorer. Illustrator does not have to be installed, and nothing else has to be added alongside it.
- 1Download Design Previewer and run the installer. It is free for 15 days with everything unlocked.
- 2Open your folder and choose Medium icons or larger from the View menu.
- 3Press Alt+P to see the selected file at a larger size in the preview pane.
If an AI file stays blank
Illustrator normally saves a PDF-compatible copy of the artwork inside each AI file, and the thumbnail is drawn from that copy.
A file saved with "Create PDF Compatible File" switched off has no such copy. Open it in Illustrator, choose Save As, tick that option in the Illustrator Options window, and save. It is ticked by default, so most files already have it.
If an EPS file stays blank
An EPS file can carry a preview picture, and most do. Stock vectors and logo packs almost always include one.
An EPS saved with its preview set to None holds only print instructions. Saving it again from Illustrator with a TIFF preview gives it a thumbnail.
